Abstract
The article presents the transformation of the final school composition genre shown in its historical perspective. According to the genre the modern final composition is close to the composition on the free subject that was practiced in Russian gymnasiums of the pre-Soviet period. However, broken traditions of composition writing on both literary and free subjects cause the problems in modern education.
