Abstract
Mentsu can be mapped with at least three similar concepts of social psychology, which are often confused with mentsu: public self-awareness, self-esteem and impression management or self-presentation. Mentsu is consistent, not just in individual differences but in amount of attention paid to the public I. Mentsu rather means implementing one’s own social roles in accordance with the expectations of others. However, mentsu is only one factor that affects public image.
